2026 State of Scouting Message

Good evening and thank you for joining us for our Celebration of Scouting evening featuring our FOS reception, Scouting Appreciation and Fun Fest, and our 52nd Distinguished Award reception and ceremony honoring Mike Surbaugh. Your support and participation this evening is a testament to our shared commitment to the betterment of our local communities, and the growth and character development of our local youth who will be tomorrow’s leaders.

Through his work as our 13th Chief Scout, Mike led the pathway for full inclusion in Scouting for all people, which has been a boon for SVMBC. Through these efforts, SVMBC consistently rises to the top nationally as one of the most diverse and welcoming Councils in the nation.

Mike now serves on our SVMBC Advisory Committee to the Board, choosing SVMBC for the great Council we are. In this role, Mike comes to visit us many times each year and lends his expertise and knowledge in support of our process of continuing to strive to be the very best Council we can be, in service to our area’s young people.

In his service to SVMBC, Mike has pledged $1 Million to our Endowment and is matching any and all Endowment gifts up to that $1 Million.

He has also been instrumental in helping to secure funding to help build the new training center at Chesebrough Scout Reservation and has been a tremendous sounding board for Mark McHaddon personally as we strive to implement a bold new vision for the Council moving forward.

As the Silicon Valley Monterey Bay Council celebrates more than 100 years of building young leaders, we are proud to share that our local Scouting programs are strong and vibrant. We will serve nearly 12,000 young people in 2026 through a variety of age-appropriate programs, hand in hand with our volunteers and community partners.

As we enter this new and exciting time of bringing Scouting’s values and character-based programs to our next generation of leaders, you have our commitment that we will instill in them the honor and integrity that comes with being a Scout. In doing so, we will help to build them up, ensure that they can be the best versions of themselves, and prepare them for successful future outcomes.

Thank you for supporting Scouting in the Silicon Valley Monterey Bay area, and for everything you do for Scouting.
